Pet Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease where cartilage breaks down, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. The cause to this disease includes aging, genetics, obesity, injury, and infections. Pets may experience pain, difficulty moving, and muscle weakness. Management involves medication, weight management, exercise, and supportive care to improve their quality of life.

Common signs of osteoarthritis in pets include limping, stiffness, difficulty rising, and reluctance to exercise. If you notice any of these signs in your pet, it’s important to consult with one of our veterinarians for proper diagnosis and management. Early intervention can improve their pet’s comfort and mobility.

Osteoarthritis is diagnosed osteoarthritis through physical examination, assessing joint pain and mobility, often aided by X-rays to visualize joint changes.

Treatment Options:

Medications: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) alleviate pain and inflammation.
Supplements: Glucosamine/chondroitin support joint health.
Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy weight reduces joint stress.
Physical Therapy: Exercises and massage improve mobility and strength.
Acupuncture: Traditional methods can provide pain relief and enhance well-being.

Another commonly used treatment are Librela injections for dogs and Solensia injections for cats. These injections are both FDA-approved monoclonal antibody therapies for osteoarthritis (OA). They target and neutralize specific inflammatory molecules involved in OA progression. This treatment involves a series of injections administered by a veterinarian. Regular monitoring of the pet’s response and any potential side effects is essential. These therapies offer long-lasting relief from pain and inflammation associated with OA, improving the pet’s comfort and mobility.

Ways to prevent osteoarthritis or slow its progression:

Maintain Healthy Weight: Keep pets at a healthy weight to reduce joint stress.
Regular Exercise: Provide moderate, low-impact exercise to strengthen muscles and support joint health.
Proper Nutrition: Ensure a balanced diet rich in nutrients that support joint health, including omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants.
Joint Supplements: Consider incorporating glucosamine and chondroitin supplements into their diet to support cartilage health.
Routine Veterinary Care: Schedule regular check-ups with a veterinarian to monitor joint health and address any concerns early on.

Regular check-ups are important for pets with osteoarthritis to monitor their condition, adjust treatment plans, and ensure their overall well-being. These check-ups allow for early detection of any changes in symptoms and enable veterinarians to provide tailored care for improved quality of life.
